Why Mulching & Edging Matters
Mulch isn't just cosmetic — it's actively beneficial for your plants and beds. A 2-3 inch layer of quality hardwood mulch retains soil moisture (your shrubs need significantly less water through summer), suppresses weed germination (most weed seeds need light at soil level to sprout, and mulch blocks that light), insulates root zones against heat extremes and freeze-thaw cycles, and slowly breaks down into organic matter that feeds your soil. Done right, it's a long-term plant-health investment, not just a curb-appeal fix.
But it only works if it's the right material, applied at the right depth, in beds with properly cut edges. Cheap bagged mulch from a big-box store doesn't perform the same as premium triple-shredded hardwood — it breaks down faster, doesn't suppress weeds as well, and often contains dyes that fade or wash out. The proper depth is also crucial: 2-3 inches is the sweet spot. Less doesn't suppress weeds; more suffocates plant roots and traps too much moisture against trunks (the cause of most mulch-related plant deaths). And without crisp edges, the mulch slowly migrates into the lawn and the beds lose definition over a few weeks.
What's Included
Our Process
Mulching is straightforward but rewards attention to detail. We arrive with the right amount of mulch for your beds (measured in advance during the estimate). The crew starts with bed cleanup — pulling weeds, raking out last year's debris, and trimming back any overgrown plants that are crowding the bed edges. Then bed edges get re-cut with a hand spade, creating a clean trench between lawn and bed (this is where the visual difference comes from — most amateur mulch jobs skip this step). Mulch is then wheelbarrowed from the truck to the beds, dumped in piles, and hand-spread to uniform 2-3 inch depth. Tree rings get special attention — proper taper, never volcanoes. Walkways and driveways get fully blown clean of any mulch dust or scraps. Most residential mulch installs take 4-6 hours start to finish.
Pricing & What to Expect
Mulch is priced per cubic yard installed, including delivery and labor. Most Central NJ properties pay $80-$120 per yard installed, with most homes needing 4-15 yards depending on bed size. A typical quarter-acre property with standard foundation beds and a few decorative beds runs $400-$1,000 total; larger properties or those with extensive bed systems can run higher. Edging-only service (no mulch) runs $200-$500 depending on linear footage. Free measurements — we walk the property, measure the beds, give you the exact yardage and quote in writing.
Ready to Book?
Mulching is best done in spring (late April through May) before plants leaf out, but we install year-round whenever the ground isn't frozen. Most homes benefit from a fresh top-off layer every spring — adding 1-2 inches over the existing mulch keeps depth right at the magic 2-3 inch zone. Every 4-5 years we recommend full removal and replacement as the bottom layers fully compost.
