Why Hedge Trimming Matters
Hedge trimming is one of those jobs that looks simple until you try to do it right. Wrong timing kills bloom cycles on flowering shrubs — trim a forsythia in late summer and you've removed next spring's flowers before they form. Trim azaleas in winter and same problem. Wrong tool or technique leaves jagged cut ends that brown out in the sun, creating an ugly band of dead-looking foliage across the top of the hedge that takes a full season to grow out. Wrong shaping creates bare spots in the lower portions of the hedge that can take 2-3 seasons to fill back in.
Professional hedge work is about understanding each species' growth pattern and timing. Boxwoods get trimmed differently than privet, which is different from yews, which is different from holly. Some shrubs respond well to aggressive shearing; others need selective hand-pruning to maintain shape and health. The visual difference between a properly-trimmed shrub and an amateur job is huge, and the recovery time from a bad cut can be a full year or more. We've trimmed thousands of shrubs across Central NJ — we know what each species needs.
What's Included
Our Process
We arrive with professional gas-powered trimmers, hand pruners, loppers, and a clean tarp. The crew walks the property with you (or solo) to confirm what you want trimmed, what shape you want, and whether anything should be left alone. Power-shearing handles bulk shape work; hand-pruning handles specimen plants and anywhere selective cuts are needed. Tarps are placed under each shrub before we start so cleanup is faster. After trimming, all clippings get bundled and loaded for haul-away. Most residential properties get full hedge service in 2-4 hours depending on the number and size of shrubs.
Pricing & What to Expect
Hedge trimming is priced per shrub or by the property based on number, size, and species. Single-shrub trims run $25-$75 each; full property hedge service typically $200-$600 depending on plant count and complexity. Recurring service (2-3 trims per season for formal hedges, 1-2 for natural shrubs) is priced at a discount when committed for the year. We give free walkthrough estimates — takes 15 minutes and you'll have an honest number with no pressure.
